Panerai is recognised as one of the world’s top manufacturers of beautiful yet practical time pieces. As a partner to Luna Rossa, Challenger on Record in the 36th America’s Cup, they have our vote as both an iconic and desirable watch brand. We’ve chosen our top Panerai water-resistant pieces in preparation for the day when we can get out on the water again, be it for racing or simply to enjoy a day out on a boat.
Best for Yachting – PANERAI LUMINOR LUNA ROSSA GMT – 44 MM
Perhaps this is our favourite piece because its close to our yachtie hearts? The Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT is strongly inspired by the Challenger of Record of the 36th America’s Cup, Luna Rossa.
Panerai and Luna Rossa share a common mission: perfecting tools destined to change the rules of the game. Unprecedented in its design, revolutionary in its mechanics and distinguished in its materials, the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44 mm is a model with a high degree of sophistication. It is a pure expression of the affinity between Panerai and the team that first launched the challenge to the Defender of the 36th America’s Cup, the final act is expected to take place in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2021.
Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44 mm incorporates cutting-edge materials that Panerai has in common with the Luna Rossa Team, like titanium, a metal with hypoallergenic properties and unrivaled lightness and corrosion resistance. With the addition of special carbon-based DLC coating the metal has an increased degree of wear resistance.
Introduced to support Team Luna Rossa in the race for the 36th America’s Cup, the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44 mm highlights and reaffirms its role as the official watch with a personalised inscription on the dial as well as an intricate engraving on the case back. But above all, it explores new frontiers with the dial itself, which is covered in a thin layer of technical fabric from the sailing equipment of the AC75 monohull of Luna Rossa. This is a really unique and exciting feature.
Selected to ensure the ultimate mechanical performance, the Caliber P.9010/GMT, designed and developed entirely by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, stands out for the presence of dual barrels that store sufficient energy for a three-day power reserve and rapid time adjustment connected to the modification of the date. The GMT function is crucial for synchronizing with the time zone of Luna Rossa approaching the 36th America’s Cup.
Water-resistant up to 30 bar (about 300 meters deep), the new Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 44 mm is equipped with a Ponte Vecchio calfskin strap in black with white stitching. An additional black rubber strap is included, along with a box wrapped in technical sail fabric and personalized with the Panerai and Luna Rossa logos. Also enclosed is a certificate attesting to the authenticity of the technical material from Luna Rossa that composes the coating of the dial.
Best for Hi-Tech Materials – PANERAI LUMINOR MARINA FIBRATECHTM – 44 MM
Panerai interprets the future with an innovative Luminor Marina moulded in a new high-techcomposite based on basalt fibre.
In the field of the science of materials, Panerai is again defying the known limits by means of a surprising discovery involving mineral basalt fibres, a special element which forms part of the new Panerai FibratechTM watches. A solution used for the very first time in the watch industry and introduced today as a preview with the new Luminor Marina FibratechTM – 44 mm (PAM01663).
Obtained with natural and eco-sustainable row fibers, Fibratech is a composite with remarkable physical and mechanical properties. It is 60% lighter than steel, resilient and highly resistant to corrosion, and it has come into being as a result of the state-of-the-art technical expertise of the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee.
Tested in the aerospace industry, then further developed and refined by Panerai in order to give shape to its watches, FibratechTM is made from unidirectional mineral fibres produced by the fusion of basalt rock; these fibers, binded with polymers, become thin layers which are superimposed in a precise orientation and then consolidated through a pressure and temperature controlled process.
This high-tech discovery is ready to make its own high performance contribution to the next generation of Panerai FibratechTM watches, of which the Luminor Marina FibratechTM (PAM01663) is the first example.
With a highly non-homogenous matt grey appearance, but above all with a look that is absolutely impossible to replicate since it depends completely on the cut of the material, FibratechTM opens up new and exciting opportunities for Panerai in the technical and aesthetic spheres.
Ensuring an equally high standard on the mechanical front is the P.9010 calibre, entirely conceived and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. This is an automatic movement only 6 mm thick, fitted with the function for quickly setting the time, which at the same time modifies the date. The movement has a power reserve of three days, provided by its twin spring barrels.
Water-resistant to 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres), the new Luminor Marina FibratechTM – 44 mm is fitted with a strap made of Panerai SportechTM, a woven material giving a waterproof rubberised effect, blue with white stitching, fitted with a trapezoid titanium buckle with black DLC coating. A second rubber strap in blue is also supplied, together with a screwdriver for removing the buckle.
Best for Contemporary Retro – LUMINOR MARINA PANERAI GOLDTECHTM – 44 MM
Panerai expands the identity of the Luminor Marina collection with a new interpretation moulded from an exclusive and distinctive precious metal.
Panerai continues its unstoppable development process by reinventing the aesthetic dimensions of the Luminor Marina icon. Enhanced by the unique properties of an advanced precious metal with a technologically advanced alloy, the new Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech™ – 44 mm (PAM01112) has taken shape.
The collection is a contemporary manifestation of landmark elements from Panerai’s history. Luminor is the name of both a luminescent substance developed by the brand and a model that rose to prominence in the early 1950s as a result of its diving utility and connection to the brand’s most notable military achievements. The new Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech™ – 44 mm breaks the mold, capitalizing on the legacy of a renowned model to exhibit a new, authentic expression of Italian genius and creativity.
The Luminor Marina – 44 mm in Panerai Goldtech™ is permanent addition to the collection, possessing a sophisticated character and singular identity thanks to the precious metal from which it is forged. It is red gold derived from an extraordinary formula perfected by the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee and characterized by a high percentage of copper (24%) combined with platinum (0.4%). Both materials are key to achieving an intense, unique tone and an extreme degree of mechanical and oxidation resistance.
Best for Hi-Tech Sporty Profile – PANERAI LUMINOR MARINA DMLS – 44 MM
Panerai reinterprets the iconic Luminor Marina reinforcing its commitment in high-tech materials field.
The Luminor Marina – 44 mm (PAM01662), reflects the extraordinary balance by combining high-tech features with a sportier profile. The fundamental principle underlying the model is technical and aesthetic enhancement of its constituent materials. The effect is achieved with the mix of DMLS titanium and CarbotechTM, expression of Panerai know-how.
Surprisingly light and at the same time incredibly resilient, the case is made of titanium with Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology, a futuristic 3D printing process by which titanium powder, sintered by a high power fiber optic laser, takes a solid shape that grows 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time. It is a one of a kind process because it can create a hollow cavity within.
This material, together with the equally advanced CarbotechTM, a carbon composite developed by the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee, used for the bezel, crown and lever of the Safety Lock crown protection bridge, opens up to a contemporary and openly unconventional aesthetic dimension. An unpolished anthracite dial with tone-on-tone SuperLumiNovaTM indexes and numbers, enhances the monochrome visual identity.
On the mechanical front, applying the P.9010 Caliber, a recurring presence in the history of Luminor Marina family, was a foregone conclusion. The self-winding movement measures just 6 mm thick and was entirely designed and developed by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. It is equipped with a rapid time adjustment function that also changes the date and is supported by a 3-day power reserve supplied by a double barrel.
Waterproof up to 30 bar (about 300 meters deep) the new Luminor Marina – 44 mm is accompanied by a black Panerai SportechTM strap with anthracite stitching. A second technical rubber strap, in black, completes the package, together with a specific screwdriver for its removal and for replacing the buckle.
About Panerai
Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and school of watch-making, for many decades Panerai supplied the Italian Navy and its specialist diving corps in particular, with precision instruments.
The designs developed by Panerai in that time, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act for many years and were launched on the international market only after the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997.
Today Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture. Panerai watches are sold across the world through an exclusive network of distributors and Panerai boutiques
