2020 has thrown the boat show industry into a spiral. With people either afraid to travel (or not being able to travel at all), or even afraid of crowds, new ways of reaching boat buyers and industry players have emerged. But how do we still support the local industry while also offering a platform for potential buyers to view boats?

The Cape 31 is a South African-produced which has been developed for a fast, one-design racing circuit in strong winds, utilising a small crew. The C31 is the brainchild of Irvine Laidlaw, who wanted to develop a boat that would be built and assembled in Cape Town to support the local boat building industry. Designed by Mark Mills, this boat has taken the one-design 30 footer class by storm, leading to sales in the UK, USA and Australia. For the first time the Lipton Challenge Cup is being sailed on the fast and fun Cape 31’s. The approved sails suppliers for this sports boat are Ullman Sails and North Sails South Africa, as part of a mandate of the Cape 31 build to make use of South African suppliers. Where previously, top-class sailors would largely rely on imported product, the two world-class Cape Town lofts are now also exporting state-of-the-art sails, taking on the best in the business. North Sails South Africa and Ullman Sails Production have not only put local sailmaking on the international map, they have also bolstered brand South Africa at a time when local boatbuilders are increasingly making their presence felt on the world stage.
