South African sailor, Matt Whitehead has always dreamed of racing in the Volvo Ocean Race – and he came that much closer by competing on the VO65, ‘Childhood 1’, the DutchSail entry in the Ocean Race Europe. We caught up with Matt after a few very busy months.

The Vasco da Gama Ocean Race is the oldest coastal ocean race on the South African sailing calendar. Organised by Point Yacht Club, it was the 25th edition of the race sailing the Durban to East London course. Traditionally sailed from Durban to Maputo, the 50th edition of the Race began on Monday 17th May at 6am, starting a day late due to bad weather.

Clarisse Cremer Breaks Ellen McArthur’s Record In The Vendée Globe
by Ingrid HaleClarisse Cremer finished the Vendée Globe Race at 15:44:25 hrs UTC taking 12th place on the IMOCA 60, Banque Populaire X. Clarisse broke Ellen McArthur’s 21 year-old record as the first female skipper in this the 9th edition of the race.

The Vendée Globe Race has kept us thrilled and on the edge of our seats from day one. After 81 days at sea Yannick Bestaven, the 48 year old French skipper of Maître Coq IV, is the overall winner of the ninth edition of the Race. He crossed the line in third place off Les Sables d’Olonne, France at 03hrs 19mins 46 secs early this morning. However, he takes the overall victory due to his compensation of 10 hours and 15 minutes for his role in the search and rescue of fellow competitor Kevin Escoffier. He finished ahead of Charlie Dalin by 2hrs 31mins 01secs and 6hrs 40mins 26secs ahead of Louis Burton.

Tracy Edwards was the skipper of the all-female entry Maiden in the 1989/1990 edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race. She was just 24 years old! Tracy and her crew broke barriers, and proved so many people wrong in the male-dominated sport. They weren’t even expected to finish the first leg, but they did just that, and went on to win both southern ocean legs too.
