Christmas shopping got you down? Fragrance gifting is always a good idea! Although yes, we hear you, it’s extremely hard to buy without being dead-sure that the recipient really likes the way a certain perfume or cologne smells. That’s why we’ve put together four perfect choices to make scent shopping a cinch.
BEST: Fragrance for Collectors
THE SCENT: Chanel RED EDITION No5 EDP (R2, 725 for 100ml)
It’s easy to get swept away with the tide of new fragrant promises (more than 100 new fragrances are launched each year), but it’s classic cult scents that have staying power. Point in case, Chanel No5. Since its launch in 1921, the scent has been the best-selling female fragrance worldwide, only recently pipped into second place by Chanel compatriot, Coco Mademoiselle. And, here’s the reason this near century-old EDP is such a classic (and a great gift to buy serious fragrance lovers); it’s still highly wearable and it lasts on skin without being overly cloying or completely sickly sweet. The dry-down (the notes that linger longer) is deliciously powdery – and has staying power! The latter is essential when you’re looking for bang for your buck. Here’s a tip though; when you’re choosing who gets this gorgeous (and very limited edition) bottle, don’t think of it as an “old ladies” scent. The juice, together with the red festive season bottle, is just what the art of fragrance is all about.
BEST: Men Needing a Fragrance Update
THE SCENT: Dunhill Icon (R 1, 645 for 100ml)
If he’s been wearing the same cologne day-in and day-out (we reckon anything over a decade is way too long), he needs something new. However it’s wise to gift men who are stuck in a fragrance rut something along classic lines. That means perennial favourite scent ingredients (like bergamot, vetiver and oak moss) that when blended with more modern fragrance notes (such as smokey oud and leather) won’t leave him feeling nervous and reaching for his 80’s classic again. Find all these notes (plus the aromatic spiciness of black pepper and cardamom) in Dunhill’s Icon, a scent that works just a well on gentlemen of a certain vintage as it does on the younger crowd.
BEST: Scent for Summer Nights
The SCENT: Sisley Eau du Soir (R 3, 450 for 100ml)
This is a great option to give to women who like building fragrance wardrobes. Why wear one EDP over and over again, when there’s a plethora of scents to spritz on according to one’s mood, outfit or even holiday. If you and the Missus are going somewhere very special this holiday season, a bottle of Eau de Soir is a perfect travel accompaniment – especially for the warm weather. The story goes that wearing it is like taking a stroll through the gardens of Alcazar in Seville. Think an ode to the syringa flower with zesty top notes of mandarin and grapefruit, a heart (the real personality of the scent) of absolute rose and heady jasmine and finally, base notes of sensual amber and patchouli. In a word: delicious!
BEST: For Modern Men
THE SCENT: Bentley Momentum Unlimited (R 1, 245 for 100ml)
This recently launched scent is a wonderful gift for the suave man-about-town. If he’s into fashion, grooming, sleek cars and the latest must-drink gin, then pick Bentley Momentum Unlimited. Ideal for city days in the office, nights on the town or whenever he needs a real style accessory, notes like wood and leather are highlighted by the freshness of fruity grapefruit and apple. In the dry-down things get a little more serious with cedarwood, vetiver and sandalwood, all classic scent ingredients that give men’s fragrance depth and richness. The result? A fresh, aromatic and woody kick for men who are real sophisticates.
