Sail + Leisure is proud to announce our association as an official media partner to one of the most prestigious regattas on the Mediterranean sailing calendar, the Superyacht Cup.
This makes Sail + Leisure the only magazine outside of the UK, the US and Holland to have been selected to partner with the Cup! This lucky Ed will be on location during the Superyacht Cup in Palma and will bring daily updates on all our platforms of all the events.
The Superyacht Cup
The Superyacht Cup is the longest running superyacht regatta in Europe, a favourite with yacht owners, friends, captains and crew who visit Palma de Mallorca annually for the four day event. With warm spring conditions and reliable sea breezes, the Bay of Palma offers some of the most idyllic racing conditions in the Mediterranean. The racing is run by the highly experienced international race officers and the team at Real Club Nautico de Palma. The participating super yachts are all moored together stern-to in the Superyacht Cup Regatta Village located at Muelle Viejo with the iconic Palma Cathedral and Palm tree lined Paseo Maritimo providing a stunning back-drop.
“The Superyacht Cup has always been a fantastic mix of returning friends and exciting newcomers, and 2018 will be no different,” said Kate Branagh. “We are delighted to welcome Missy, Scorpione of London and Q to the party and we are certain they will have a wonderful time both on and off the water.”
Keeping the Seas Clean
The Superyacht Cup is the first superyacht regatta to engage crews and owners in joining the race to restore ocean health with Sailors for the Sea’s Clean Regattas programme. This initiative is something after our own heart, in line with our We Care pillar! Each boat will receive refillable water bottles for all the crew plus an 18 liter water tank which can be filled via their water makers, used to refill the water bottles every day. This is a fantastic initiative, so great to see this type of care filtering through to the racing circuit.
The entries
The elegant ladies of the J-Class, Svea and Velsheda will open The Superyacht Cup on Wednesday 20 June, the first of four days of competitive racing. They will be joined on the second and following days by the full fleet, including regular Superyacht Cup participants Inoui, Atalante, Saudade and the 33m Baltic Yachts built Win Win, who will be out to defend their 2017 Class A title. Joining Missy and Q in the first-timer contingent are Aquarius and the 35.2m Highland Fling 15, aka the ultimate ‘performance Swan’. She is bound to make this year’s performance-based boats very nervous, and rightly so – her prior successes include her class-win at last year’s America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta. The awe-inspiring fleet of 17 entries is currently completed by yachts like the giant 62m Athos, the largest yacht so far entered, last year’s Superyacht Cup winner Bolero, Ganesha, another Vitters graduate, and the 35m Farr ketch Solana.
Race enthusiasts will be able to look forward to a stellar fleet, not to mention tight racing.
Many South Africans will be crewing on these magnificent beauties during the Superyacht Cup on boats like Highland Fling 15, Win Win and Velsheda. Sail + Leisure will no doubt catch up with them on the dock.
With thanks
New to the 2018 Superyacht Cup are Silver Sponsors, the Boat International Owners’ Club and NetJets, while Axopar Boats are providing the official spectator and press boats.
