Cool Vineyard Stays

by Ingrid Hale
Vineyard stay Mexico

There’s no bad time to visit a vineyard. Why just stop by a winery for the day when you could stay overnight? CN Traveler lists their favourite Airbnbs located on vineyards from a far a field as Italy’s Umbria and Piedmont regions, Argentina’s Mendoza, California’s Sonoma, or Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico.

Oliveira, Portugal

A vineyard stay PortugalIdeal for a family trip to Portugal, this home sits on seven acres of land in the heart of the Alto Douro wine region. It’s just a few miles from downtown Régua, where guests can enjoy walks along the Douro River. With six bedrooms, the home can comfortably fit 12 guests and has a historic, yet warm feel, thanks to rooms filled with antiques and a striking stone kitchen. In addition to the vineyard’s acreage, guests can also enjoy relaxing by the pool, playing the piano, or a game of pool.

Mercurey, Burgundy, France

A vineyard stay France If only we could pack all the vintage rugs from this six-bedroom Airbnb and decorate our homes with them. A stay here means you get access to the entire estate, originally built in the 17th century, which includes the vineyard, wine-tasting cellar, and surrounding gardens. There’s also a fully-stocked kitchen with everything you need for a dinner party, billiards room with a pool table, and a study in case you need to get a little work done. Beyond the Airbnb and vineyard, you can wander the streets of the adorably town of Mercurey, drive around to see other Burgundy wineries, or take advantage of the hiking paths that wind over the hills and between the other vineyards.

Umbria, Italy

vineyard stay ItalyThis light-filled, five-bedroom home is enough of a reason to finally take that trip to Italy. The 18th-century farmhouse at the border of Umbria and Tuscany is the ideal spot for wine and sightseeing tours. Guests can explore the vineyard and feel truly immersed in the traditional Italian wine culture, thanks to the wine tasting available right on the estate. Guests will also love the private infinity pool, tennis court, and modern art throughout the villa.

Santa Ynez, California

Vineyard stay CaliforniaThe architecture of this luxury home located in Santa Ynez’s wine country is nothing short of incredible. The unique structure of the house allows the top story to be completely separate from bottom, and it’s where guests will find the two modern, cozy bedrooms. In addition to the two bedrooms, the top-floor also has a living room, a wet bar with a built-in refrigerator drawer and freezer drawer for snacks and leftovers, and a coffee maker. Be sure to lounge outside in the morning with a cup of coffee and enjoy the unbelievable mountain views from the multiple decks. The bottom-floor, where guests will find the full kitchen and lounging space, is used as a shared space where the host sometimes hosts workshops, but it can also be rented exclusively for guest-use only, too, if you’d prefer the privacy.

Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico

Vineyard stay MexicoOne to consider for your next trip, take the drive from California to Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe (one of our favorite road trips) and stay in this bubble Airbnb to see both stars and grapes from its vineyard location. There are actually 10 bubble rooms on site, each with their own private bathroom, full-sized bed, coffee maker, and mini bar. If you’re worried about the privacy of, well, a clear room, know that there are hay bales between each accommodation and curtains so you don’t feel totally exposed.

Palaia, Tuscany, Italy

Vineyard stays TuscanyAn hour and a half’s drive from Florence, this home is one of two listings for rent on a vineyard that bottles both wine and olive oil. We’d book the Amedeo Modigliani unit on the lower level because of the brick ceilings — just look at them! You’ll have your own private living space, kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, plus outdoor space to enjoy the sweeping view. That view is best enjoyed at the shared infinity pool — which is set up on a hill, overlooking the olive trees and Tuscan countryside.

Waiheke Island, New Zealand

a vineyard stay New ZealandThe island of Waiheke is just a short ferry ride from Auckland and a beloved weekend getaway from the city, thanks to more than 30 wineries sprinkled on its rolling hills. One of our favorites, Mudbrick, also runs a number of rentals, including spots right on the beach and the opulent owner’s villa. But our favorite is the villa right on the vineyard itself: a three-bedroom, lushly designed home with breathtaking views of the bay and vineyard below from nearly every window. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and indoor and outdoor dining areas, but we’d book a few meals at the vineyard’s on-site restaurant (the lamb rump is delicious) or at least make a couple visits to the tasting room and bar.

Vignale Monferrato, Piedmont, Italy

Vineyard stay ItalyLove red wine? Then book a stay at La Rocca winery’s one-room B&B. Rows of Barbera grapes fill the front yard of this studio Airbnb, which is hosted by Tracey, an American transplant who moved to northern Italy in the 1980s. While the home is relatively sparse — there’s a bed, sofa, kitchenette, and fireplace — it’s the perfect base for exploring the Piedmont region. Plus, if you visit during crush season in August, you can pitch in at the vineyard and help with the harvest. Visitors at other times of year are welcome to help prune the vines or bottle the wine — or just kick back and taste.

Tunuyan, Mendoza, Argentina

Vineyard stays AregentinaSmack in the middle of 200 acres of vines in Argentina’s Uco Valley, this Airbnb is on Finca Don Arturo, which is associated with Bodega Los Toneles, a stellar steakhouse and tasting room in Mendoza itself. The three-bedroom home has a huge kitchen and living spaces for when you’re not driving to different bodegas, or wineries, in the region. There’s also a private pool for decompressing and the Airbnb’s caretakers, Simon and Susana, are available to cook you a full asado (grilled meats) meal upon request.

Glen Ellen, Sonoma, California

Vineyard stays CaliforniaAirbnbs in Sonoma and Napa Counties are a dime a dozen, but finding one on a vineyard is a little harder to manage. This three-bedroom home is surrounded on all sides by neighbouring wineries’ vines, and offers plenty of chances to get outside and enjoy the grape-filled view. There’s a private pool, bocce court, outdoor dining room, and more. Plus, if you’re really craving wine from the source, a number of tasting rooms are within walking distance.
