An unusual season
Even after a delayed start to the 2021 season, which saw the event finals roll into 2022, SailGP still produced an action-packed season of sailing. Even with new teams on the water in 2021, it was still the favourites, Tom Slingsby’s SailGPAUS, Nathan Outteridge’s SailGPJPN, Jimmy Spithills SailGPUSA and Ben Ainslie’s SailGPGBR who were the main contenders throughout the season.
The Spaniards started out the season strongly with gusto, but as the season wore on the favourites proved their worth once again.

A final to remember
The entire eight event season had been geared towards the winner-take-all final race between the top three boats, SailGPUSA, SailGPAUS and SailGPJPN. One race with just one prize of $1 Million.
But the final could only be raced after five fleet races sailed over two days. Going into the final event, and following the penultimate event held in Sydney, the top three teams appeared to have secured their place in the dash for cash, but the Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix had plenty more challenges in store. Over the two days, nothing was straightforward.
But it was Tom Slingsby’s SailGPAUS team who took the title, notching up two consecutive wins, albeit in a controversial final day with collisions, wind shifts and capsizes.
