Since season 2 of SailGP started in Bermuda a few weeks ago, we are left wanting more. Many things have been said about the opening event, and opinions may vary. But at the same time no one can dispute that SailGP has kept us all on the edge of our seats.
We relive racing live, and Matthew Sheahan from Planet Sail reviews two days of high octane action. “With global rockstars such as Peter Burling, Jimmy Spithill and Sir Ben Ainslie joining Sail GP we thought we knew who would be at the front of the fleet. But we were wrong. After the first race, the form guide was in tatters. And then the action really started”, says Matthew.
Day 1:
We were surprised with the front runners and the results, with the SailGP France leading out of the gates first. The Spanish were in contention too – and where were the favourites? At the back of the fleet learning about their boats and working on systems issues.
Day 2:
The favourites redeemed themselves – SailGP GBR and SailGP New Zealand made their way to the front of the fleet. But early successes of the French and the Australians made for an interesting final race with Ben Ainslie’s SailGPGBR taking the top spot on the podium.
