SailGP shows us how the teams bring the power to the ever-impressive F50 boats, and what it takes to be the best wing trimmer. This series has brought highspeed sailing to a whole new level. The world’s speediest wing trimmers walk us through what it takes to be the best.
Managing the F50’s 24 meter (78.7 ft) wing sail is a big job and requires athleticism, the ability to perform under pressure, and near-perfect communication with the flight controller and helmsman. With immense amounts of data coming off of each boat at all times, it is up to the shore crew to make sure their team knows what to expect on and off the water. It is then up to the SailGP wing trimmer to know how to set up the boat perfectly to maintain enough speed and lift to stay ahead of their competitors. With racing as close as this, one little tweak in the wrong direction could mean the difference between winning or losing.
Watch the clip below to see what it takes to excel in this role.
