The SailGP slogan “Powered By Nature” is a stark reminder that these flying machines are still sailing boats. The tech-driven fleet has been sharing the data captured each time the boats are racing, and we are all for it.
This incredible one-design fleet has redefined sailing, bringing a whole new meaning to “hi-tech”. The races are known to be the fastest, most competitive inshore stadium races at some of the world’s most iconic harbours. The spectacular fan experience is available at every level – at the race venue, on the water, on the air through television, through an award-wining app and year-round through their digital channels. The technical information coming from the boats is measured, analysed and fed back to the teams from their shore crew in real time, and the fans are involved in ever step.
With Season 2 suspended until 2021, the fierce national rivalries have been supercharged by the excitement of the first event, which was still able to take place in Auckland earlier this year. The question on everyone’s mind is: “Can Tom Slingsby and the Australian team lift the trophy again, or will they face an upset from hungry newcomers, or an established team looking for national redemption?”
Each event includes two competition days, featuring five fleet races leading to a final match race between the two leaders. Points are accumulated at each event throughout the season, culminating with a thrilling $1 million winner-takes-all championship race at the Grand Final.
