Angela Cox from Sunday Night on 7News joined two SailGP teams as they flew an F50 around Sydney Harbour at 50 knots.
“Forget everything you ever thought about sailing. These boats fly”
Tom Slingsby and Nathan Outteridge have competed together and against one another from a very young age, and now they face off again in season 2 of the SailGP in what will be the ultimate test on the worlds fastest sailing circuit. The camaraderie between the pair is very clear on land, but once they hit the water the game is on!
“I enjoy sailing against him because if you want to be the best in the world, you’ve got to sail against the best in the world,” explains Nathan. “I rank Tom as one of the best in the world. I would call it a very fun, healthy rivalry between the two of us.”
The one-design F50 fleet, which Tom Slingsby and Nathan Outteridge helped design, pushes this competitive nature further since winning comes down to one thing – the skills of the sailors on board.
Nathan Outteridge says.
“everytime you plunge the hull into the water it’s like getting a fire hose in the face while you’re trying to ride a motorbike.”
